Do I qualify to teach in the UK?
Overseas trained teachers are able to work in UK schools for up to four years without needing to register with the General Teaching Council (GTC) as a teacher or to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). If you intend to work as a teacher in the UK for longer than four years or if you want return at anytime in the future and work as a teacher, you will need to have gained QTS before you reach the end of your four year allowance. The clock starts ticking from the very first day you start teaching and is four calendar years from that date.
To teach in the UK, you must:
- Be legally entitled to work in the UK.
- Be a qualified teacher (Bachelor Degree, Diploma of Education or Higher Diploma in Education) from a recognised training institution. Early Childhood teachers require a 3 or 4 year Bachelor Degree.
- Have a visa that entitles you to work in the UK.
- You will be required to have a UK police check (CRB clearance) once you have arrived.
